CLAW - What is it? Why am I going?

I have listed on my Recon profile that I am attending CLAW 11 in April 2012. I've had quite a few people ask me what it is, or where it is. So I thought I would do my best to explain what it is and why I'm going - though the what may be more difficult as this will be my first CLAW event.

Cleveland Leather Awareness Weekend

There you go, that's what it is. Hopefully that answers the question as to what it is. Still non the wiser?

CLAW is a non-profit convention held in, as the name would suggest, Cleveland (Ohio, USA) every year for the past ten years, the 2012 event is the eleventh. CLAW 10 attracted over 1,250 people from 34 US States and Canada - it's not very well known outside the US Leather scene, hence I suspect the interest and curiosity in my attending.

Most guys who identify as Leathermen, pervs, fetish players, BDSM enthusiasts, Masters / slaves, Handlers / pups or just plain kinky have heard of the two big gay fetish events. Namely Folsom and IML (International Mr Leather), if you're lucky they will also be familiar with MIR (Mr International Rubber) and MAL (Mid Atlantic Leather). Folsom is the biggest leather / kink gathering ever - it is crazy, for my tastes a too busy now. Its not fun when you can't move, see anything etc.

IML, MIR and MAL are all title events where someone will be awarded a title and sash for the year. This as a concept in itself is something that the UK scene doesn't really embrace. Yeah we've had Mr Hoist a few times, there have been attempts at a Mr Leather UK and Mr Rubber UK but for one reason or another they have never really taken off. Though I will just make a mention and credit John Pendal for becoming IML 2003, and being a very inspirational Leatherman for myself and I am sure many around the world and of course for putting the 'I' well and truly into IML.

One of the principles of CLAW is that there is no contest and there is no title. It is an event about community, learning, awareness, support, and honouring.

The event takes over the host hotel, and spills over into a few others. But what goes on? Well there are lots of hot guys in lots of leather and aside from a lot of kissing, sucking, fucking and beating a whole lot of good stuff! There is a market to spend your hard earned cash in, a host of organised parties and dinners to meet people. There are also lectures and discussions you can attend and become involved in, or workshops to learn new skills or improve on your existing ones while helping others explore new ones. It's not all about play, there is also an art show and silent auction fundraising cash for good causes (CLAW 10 shared $34,300 amongst 18 causes).

Not so much the workshops, but most of that stuff is familiar to anyone who has attended IML - except on a much much smaller scale. But then as you start looking into it you notice some differences between CLAW and IML, and I suspect part of that is because it is a smaller event and it can do these things.

They have a Boots & Cigars tent / marquee set-up that hosts various events (just the name of it makes you want to spend time there). Events such as the CLAW Volunteer party, the CLAW Newbie party to meet and greet others if its your first time.

I am signed up to help out as a Volunteer, and so far through Recon, the Facebook group and registration I have already been introduced to loads of guys who I am very excited about meeting.

CLAW is also home to two very different events that I would be surprised if many in the UK had heard of. The Leather Hall of Fame is an annual event whereby the leather community can recognise those who have given so much to it. It is the leather equivalent of the life-time achievement BAFTA or Oscar. So far there are only ten individuals who have been inducted in the three year history of the event, but CLAW 11 will some more added to that.

And the other event is the Leather Family Dinner - a time to come together as Leathermen and to share stories over food and wine, to meet and honour ourselves and each other. To recognise that for many their interest in the Leather lifestyle is much then just fucking in gear. Pup Kevin describes the Dinner as:

The International Leather Family Dinner is my favorite event every year at CLAW. Everyone dresses in their formal attire and sits down to a nice meal. You are seated somewhat randomly at a round table of 8 people, which is actually really nice: you get seated next to people you might not otherwise get to meet and you quickly make conversation with the entire table. There are few speeches and awards given out, and the food is always good. You get a real sense of community from these dinners, and I always walk away with a few more friends.

So yes, I am excited! I'm buying some new leather to take with me, getting my hair done especially and I can't wait to be involved, to find out more, to meet some great people and to share the exprience with those I meet and those who follow my Twitter, Tumblr and of course blog.

Nice idea maybe, and so easy to say for those of us who don't know what its like. Who have never been in the situation - and I consider myself very lucky to be in that position.

But for many many guys who are the victims of domestic violence it isn't that easy.

I'm not really a big fan of porn actor blogs, they are generally rather boring. But for some reason I was reading that of Spencer Reed last week and was very touched by a recent posting he made - The Damnage: Results of Gay Domestic Violence.

The photo above is what happened to him when his ex boyfriend attacked him for the last time (note last - this wasn't the only). And I am so impressed and pleased he has made this post public! For too fucking long male domestic violence victims (gay and straight) have had a huge stigma against them. The man is supposed to be all butch, and able to defend himself, and wouldn't stand for it. That is the difference of domestic violence - it isn't a random stranger you want to hit back at. This is being done to you by someone you love and you thought loved you.

So if you are in a violent relationship please protect yourself and do what you need to get out of there! Pick up the phone and call a local support organisation, suicide line, gay switchboard / organisation - whoever it is try to take that first step! Get yourself some support - even if its just someone at the end of a phone!!

Remember when you were a kid and you thought you were the only gay in your school, town, city, country or the world? You know what you weren't - just as you aren't the only one having the crap beaten out of you by someone you love. There is help!

And if you suspect someone is in an abusive relationship then please reach out - however you can send that lifeline! You may well save someone's life!!

Many are starting to make plans and preparations for International Mr Leather in Chicago at the end of May. I had the pleasure of staying at the host hotel last year and loved it! I didn't do as much as I would have liked ... as in go to many of the social / events, but I still had a blast surrounded by wall to wall leather!

This year I won't be able to make it over there - finances mean I can't afford the £1,500 flight and hotel before food, drink and leather market spend. A real shame, but these things can't be helped!

I am though planning on attending again in 2012! I know it is over a year away, but I'm still really excited to be getting back to the Daddy of Leather events!

I rather randomly remembered one of the very first Leather profile sites I used and had a profile on. Most of the guys on there have moved on and I have no idea what happened to them. One or two are still around and I read their blogs regularly.

LeatherNavigator was quite a pioneer as far as I remember. Long before the days of Recon and alike here was a website connecting leathermen. It started at some time in or just before 1997 and the original profile version ran until 23rd June 2005 when the US government introduced the now infamous Federal Regulation 18 U.S.C. Section 2257.

This legislation required all companies hold copies of photo ID of everyone related to porn. It was all wrapped up in a "child protection" PR spin, but it was pretty much anti-porn. Unfortunately this legislation had this effect on quite a few excellent websites.

Companies and owners didn't really know what to do, and they didn't have the resources so had one option - close.

LeatherNavigator did relaunch in the summer of 2006 as effectively a LeatherWiki site - a fantastic idea, but unfortunately the community didn't really support it. They wanted their find-a-fuck site back. A shame, it would be awesome to have such a site!

Gone, but not forgotten by this perv.

This is really actually quite exciting!

The United Nations General Assembly just voted on a crucial resolution on extrajudicial executions and other unlawful killings that, for the first time, includes explicit language protecting LGBT people.
This resolution urges member states to thoroughly and promptly investigate all killings committed for any discriminatory reason, even on the basis of sexual orientation.
The vote was 93-55 with 27 abstentions.
The opposition mostly came from Arab and African nations where human rights are limited.
Last month, a General Assembly resolution opposed the unjustified killing of minority groups, including the LGBT community. It drew widespread criticism, and the United States lead the effort to amend the resolution.

First DADT goes in the US, and now this. December 2010 is really a rather good month for gay rights in the world! Go us!

My post about Treasure Island the other day reminded me of a site I saw a while back. It is that of documentary film maker Ryan Sullivan and his film "Island".

The film is all about Treasure Island Media. It's split into (at present) 53 separate episodes, all of which you can watch on his website. Paul Morris is well known for not being very well known! Oh we all know his work, his company, his 'reputation' but he is a big recluse. He doesn't do interviews, he is very rarely seen. And of course that is his choice, sometimes it means by doing that you can have a much happier life outside work.

Anyway, this documentary is fascinating to watch ... a journey, a story, one man's vision.

Of course anything associated with TIM gets knocked, there are stories about the authenticity of it all. But you know what - I don't really care. Yeah it would be great if it was all true as it is presented, but if it isn't I'll get over it and just enjoy watching it for what it is. Let's not forget there are three sides to every story! And its not as if Hollywood has ever tried to convince us a made up story was in fact true!

A good friend posted on his Facebook today a link to a blog post by Alex Hopkins. The post (HIV, Porn and Prudes: – Enough is Enough) concentrates on the current increase in HIV infection, the apparent growth in the acceptance of bareback fucking, and of course the impact bareback porn has on the HIV infection rate.

I am incredibly pro-choice, in both the right of an individual to have an abortion and in the right of an individual to choose how they have sex. I have strong interests in Leather, kink, BDSM etc ... for many that in itself is very upsetting and 'inappropriate'.

One of my strong passions and beliefs is that of personal expression and exploration. Sexuality and the experiences of your exploration of that is very individual and I don't think it is my place to judge others by what they wish to do providing they fulfil a key principle.

A leather prime-directive if you will (I have ST:TNG on at the moment) ... informed consent. All individuals must have made the decision to give it in all play / relationships and activities.

And what of Bareback porn, the guys in it are all signed up to my Leather Prime Directive. But by allowing it to be filmed and sold are they 'promoting' bareback sex? Are they actively saying this is ok to do so you can because its horny?

The argument is that bb porn promotes unsafe sex and contributes to the spread of HIV.

Isn't what the right-wing say about gays? By allowing rights we are 'promoting' homosexuality. Are we being that judgemental of our own tribe?

I think that isn't giving people enough credit to think for themselves. We aren't talking to children here, we are talking to grown men who need to make their own decisions.

Often people say they prefer porn from companies such as TIM, Dick Wadd because it's much hornier then that of other 'condom' porn companies.

I'm not sure that it is the fact that it is bareback that makes it hornier ... it's just better!!
