Leather Identity Project

"Our concept is simple, ask questions, present data,
and let the visitor arrive at their own conclusions."

Stories From The Quilt

The AIDS Memorial Quilt celebrates the lives of real people who were loved and lost to HIV/AIDS. They are each remembered on a stretch of fabric called a panel. The website offers a closer look at one of the 47,000 panels that comprise the ever-growing AIDS Memorial Quilt.

This story is about a panel that was created 17 years ago; however, the letter below was sent to the project office just last month. In our June e-blast, they invited everyone to share their own Quilt stories. Beverly Rotter responded to this invitation and wrote to us about her dear daughter, Iris and the panel she created for her in August of 1992.

Iris De La Cruz (Block 2419)

"My daughter, Iris De La Cruz, was one of the first female activists in the world of AIDS.

There was no place for women to go with their illnesses. She was told that nothing she had was AIDS related. She went all over America to fight for women. She started a support group for women with AIDS. She ran heterosexual dances so that people with AIDS could touch and hug each other. She spoke at conferences to people in DC, begging for women's issues to be recognized.

After she died in 1991, I continued her fight and finally opened the first center for women with AIDS in NY. It is called the IRIS HOUSE in my daughters honor. It is located on Adam Clayton Powell Blvd in NYC."

The panel below was created by a student named Chayla Fowler for her uncle, Michael S. Lumberger. It arrived in the projects office just last week!

Michael S. Lumberger

"My name is Chayla Fowler and I decided to do my graduation project on HIV/AIDS in teens and the effect it has on others. One requirement for this project is to do an action plan, which is a tangible project to benefit yourself and/or the community. By making this quilt for my uncle, Michael S. Lumberger, Sr., it touched my family, community and me.

Making this quilt brought my family a little closer together because they took time out from their differences and came up with ideas for the quilt. For example, my uncle used to take my cousins and I for ice cream every time we went over his house. There were some tears of joy and sorrow but in the end, my finished project made them proud. I feel proud as well because now my uncle can be remembered in a different way forever and people around the world can be touched by his story. I know he is proud of me and I love him."

Crack Stuffers

"Designed by men with greedy arses for men with greedy arses" ... priceless tag line and priceless company name! These guys have taken the idea of arse toys and made them ... well ... bigger, better and bluer!

I'm looking forward to my visit to Master U later in the year to pick up a truncheon (they are cheaper there then on the Crackstuffers website)!

I think the only slight dissappointment I have with these is that they aren't silicone made, so need to watch your lubes are water based. And means you can't chuck it in the dishwasher to clean it off ... can't have everything i guess.

Leather Archives & Museum

I've added a new link to the Organisations I Support list at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. It is the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago.

I've always been fascinated by the existence of the LA&M - a musem dedicated to archiving, documenting and sharing a history of a group of guys who have a fetish for leather (and other kink things) and sex. But it is about much more then sex ... it is about community, sexuality, lifestyle are education.

I really couldn't see how an organisation like the LA&M could exisit in the UK. There are huge differences between the gay Leather / Fetish scene in the the States and the UK. A lot of the UK scene is more sex clubs with a dress-code. Their ain't anything wrong with sex clubs, they can be great fun! But sometimes you want to go to a play club to do that - play and have boundaries and spaces respected.

The US scene is much more developed, there is much more of a sense of community - supporting each other, the scene itself and the community. This sense of community and belonging gives rise to organisations such as the LA&M.

Don't get me wrong there are some amazing organisations in the UK - Spanner Trust and SM Gays to name two. But I doubt a lot of the people on the fetish scene have a clue what The Spanner Trust is and why their work is so important to their play!

I am very much looking forward to my next visit to Chicago (which will hopefully be for International Mr Leather in 2010) and the opportunity to visit the Museum and spend some time there.

Maybe my interest is because my interest in the Leather fetish world goes beyond just sex. I am fascinated by the play, the roles, the scenarios, the culture - the lifestyle.

Best Barbershop 2009

I know I'm really slow behind the times on this, but better a little late then a lot late!

It is becoming a bit of a tradition now that whenever we go to San Francisco we head to Joe's Barbershop in the Castro for a cut. It's the kinda place I'd get my hair cut all the time if it wasn't 12hour flight away!

In the picture Joe is in the foreground (does my hair) and Jeff right at the back does the husbands. There really aren't that many barbershops around that you can sit down to read one of the magazines from a pile that includes the latest issue of Instigator.

It's a great place, great atmosphere and people and great service. And now that is award-winning great service! For back in May Joe's won the SF Weekly Best Barbershop award! Big congrats Joe ... look foward to seeing you in September for my Folsom cut.

Every episode of Juliet Bravo on tape

"I spent all night chasing after some bloke who turns out to be mad. Like, really mad! He had every episode of Juliet Bravo on tape".
This is the classic line from the theme to the iconic British TV series Queer as Folk. You can listen to it on the Almight Records website too. Ten years ago yesterday was the first night out clubbing I had with my now boyfriend / Civil Partner / Husband and only the 2nd day of knowing him. It was with a group of friends, most of whom we still know and see regularly. A few months back we were having drinks with some and decided that we should go out to the same nightclub we went to ten years ago! Same date and same Saturday night.

Bloody stupid idea really, we haven't been out to a nightclub for about four years. And so many of the people there would have been about 6 or 8 when we went out and wouldn't even have heard of Queer as Folk.

Which is a shame, because 10 years ago it was massive and we remember dancing madly to the theme tune there. And so last night, as promised I requested it by texting the DJ. Quite early on, the dance floor wasn't packed but there were quite a few people there having a dance.

I say having a dance, because as soon as those unmistakable opening bars came on we (the five of us who went 10 years ago) went crazy! We did, everyone else kinda stopped and had this confused look of "what the fuck is this and why are the oldies getting excited?" Slowly a few of them (generally 30+) recognised it and joined it.

But we didn't care ... we were out clubbing and dancing our tits off like loons and most importantly ... loving it!! The twinks there don't know about recording onto "tape" never mind who (or rather what) Juliet Bravo was.

And the night got better, great mix of music, a great group to go with and just fantastic fun! And it was nice to know that we may not be young and thin but my god we know how to have fun and dance like we just don't care!

The Man from IML says no!

Through a re-tweeting of a story I read the blog post from Will Clark about International Mr Leather making history and announcing that it is to ban the sale and promotion of Bareback porn in the IML vendor market.

You can read the letter from Chuck Renslow (Founder and President of IML) on Will's blog post.

Bareback in porn is difficult topic for many, they know that doing it is unsafe but watching it for many is just horny! It is something I touched upon in my post Porn, Rubbers & A Positive Attitude.

Of course this isn't go to stop the porn, and its not going to stop people barebacking. But what it does do is send a message - people think about this! There are serious life changing consequences to your actions. Some people still think there is a cure for HIV/AIDS or that you can manage it with a pill or two. They don't see the reality of it, and actions like this may help them research it a little.

And what does it mean for IML? A bit of lost revenue, and for any business that is always a tough decision to make. So guys be proud of what you've done, and we can see that actions do speak louder then words!

Eric (KnuckleCrack) has a great posting about this and barebacking. Definately suggest reading it.

Wow! Vince at Raw Image Studio is doing some pretty amazing work! There are a lot of photographers who do shots of steaming hot guys, but this guy does them really well with his own unique style and atmosphere! He captures a lot more emotion, power and pure lust in them! Hopefully some of the magazines, publishers etc will realise and give him some work - a photo book or shoot for Instigator magazine would be amazing!

Bound Gods

I've mentioned the amazing Bound Gods a few times before here, but now I even have a trailer for you to enjoy and see why they are just so good!

When I was last in New York I had to call in one of my fave shops there - Nasty Pig. What these guys are doing is great stuff - really original products, new attitudes and great prices!

A few years back, before NP was NP I bought and still enjoy a pair of their original Uniform Pants. Great trousers to wear and machine washable make them all the better!

Anyway, on my last visit I was having a look around the store and they had a sale on! The Fireman Pants caught my eye, so I tried them on, thought about it and went back the next day (last day of the Sale) and bought them. They are so comfortable, great to wear out shopping or to a clubnight.

Well now they have updated them! You can get the new style Fireman pants which look even hornier!

And if you want to really finish the look, while your at it why not get some Fireman Boots?

The Truck Man

I came across this blog yesterday - The Truck Man. Interesting concept, some pics of trucks followed by picks of sexy guys with some loose (some not at all) link to trucks. So here are some pics courtesy of the truck man that caught my eye. Oh and I've always quite liked the the Animal branded Mitsubishi or the Dodge Ram myself.

Just returned from a gorgeous weekend in Barcelona, picked up one of their free gays paper and there was an advert for Boxer that caught my eye. This pic on the front page was even better - I really do love MX boots! Woof!!

Ask The Man Who Knows Him

All credit to a good friend for the recommendation of this, I certainly hadn't heard of it before. It is a new book - only published last month that explores the relationships of 24/7 gay Master / slave relationships.

I've not bought a copy yet, thinking of saving it for our trip to Folsom Street in September. But I have read the preview that is available on Amazon. Looks very good, well put together and allows the books subjects to talk about their experiences.

The 24/7 M/s relationship is one that many people aspire to, but not many really explore or actually feel comfortable in. Master Jeff and sparky, the first couple featured in he book, are one that I have read about through their old website. slave art is someone I admire and respect hugely for his openness and honesty about his M/s relationship.

As well as enjoying a kinky side to life I also enjoy finding out, exploring and discussing other people's kinks and perversions. And there are a few things that quickly come to light once you've been around a while. You get the 24/7 wankers, the people who talk about wanting to be an owned slave who are very keen on it, and then they cum and loose all interest. Or those have a perfect fantasy about what it entails ... lots of sex, being kept locked in a cage, being abused by their Master. And the others are the people who say they want to play "No limits", but that is a posting for another time.

I've had people want to be locked in a cage in our cellar for a weekend and used occasionally. Lovely idea, but locked in a confined space in a cold damp cellar - nice fantasy but really not going to be enjoyable or above all else - safe!

The practicalities of finances, work, social life, friends, physical and mental well-being all come above the fantasy life. And of course family - how you explain your relationship to your Master or slave to a family who probably wouldn't understand.

But there are those who take all this into consideration, who explore their lives to the fullest and who understand what there own outlook on life is, their sexuality and their role in the universe and they embrace it.

I am full of complete respect and admiration for anyone who has collared a boy, or is a boy who wears a collar who really understands what it means and who respects it. And I look forward to reading about these relationships to see how it works for them.

If you would like to read the book you can get it from Amazon UK or Amazon USA.
